Are You Afraid to Sing Through that Unknown Place

Published: Mar 3, 2015  |   Category: Concerns & Issues

How many of us attempt to sing songs that we really like, only to find when we get to a particular part in the song we say or decide "we ain't going there" or "this song needs to be lowered" or "this song isn't for me." I'm sure there are a few of us at least who experience this, and we either get the musicians or musician to lower the key or we decide deep down "that its a song that I prefer to just listen to." Until you hear someone else sing it, and you just wish you had the ability or even the guts to just find a way and just sing it.

Well Singers, today I've got news for you, it is possible to attain the ability to sing that song, and in order to do that it's gonna take some working out. But guess what, there are teachers like myself who may just have the right tools to help you achieve that. Plus you won't be alone on that journey because as teachers of the Institute of Vocal Advancement, we can relate to what singers are going through, for we are regularly being coached.

The reason for sharing this is because I too in my developing years of singing had the same problem, and I hope that through these blogs you can be encouraged to take a step and do something to improve the quality of your voice. With the assistance of good technique and education I turned over a new page, created new chapter in how to break down the barriers that many of us as singers face, holistically. Although its taken me a while, I am now graciously available to help you not just through my blogs but also sharing through voice lessons, workshops how to release into that natural sound of your voice and breaking through those barriers that are in your way. "We Can Journey Together!" to achieve your vision and dreams.
Feel free to post your comments, concerns and issues with reference to the title of this opening, and look out for my up and coming blogs.

"sustaining high notes" - very interesting topic. I look forward to sharing with you the many factors that assist in preventing this from happening. Thanks Titus

I write off songs ALL the time, for the reasons mentioned above and others. I'd love to explore the things you've mentioned at some point though in a music lesson... And also I'm not sure whether my 'type' of voice, in the eyes of listeners, literally is a hinderance to exploring other song types, genres or 'that particular part' as you put it, etc. vocally. Recently I've just been 'going for it' and finding its possible to do things with practice and technique which initially aren't the desired 'go to place' vocally. But with rehearsal and realisation of the techniques necessary, I've understood theres a lot of potential. In some ways this sounds like the argument, anyone can sing anything in a technically good way, but I don't know if I agree that thats what should happen! And I feel sometimes vocal insecurities exist as a safeguard until we feel confident enough and work our way towards 'getting there' in a staged and timely way. x

Hi Leon, Is it a touchy subject because its hard to describe, or do you think its uncomfortable to talk about?

I always have this feeling, but my issue is with the lower notes. It always seems like there's never a song I can sing in the original key. I always have to raise it. I think the issue here is that I always resort to what seems easy and never challenge myself to keep practicing in the 'uncomfortable' key. I'll set myself a challenge and try this. Hopefully I will commit to it :).

Hey Brenda, it's interesting how over the past 10 years, how much you have grown and developed into your own leadership and teaching. For me to be able to hear how those areas of your voice has also developed, especially as you are now teaching parts in choirs, groups, praise teams, and even congregations. So I will say a well done for rising to the challenge, and allowing yourself to achieve. You wasn't just practicing and holding what you do to yourself, you've stepped out and into a zone that's big, spacious and challenging. Keep growing through that soil that presents so many grains of personalities! And if you if ever feel the need to know how to better those low notes, you know where to come. Happy Growing!
